Daredevil: Born Again may have been delayed to 2025, but that’s actually a good thing for the series’ overall health.
The delay of Daredevil: Born Again might seem to be cause for despair at first glance, but there are some good reasons why the MCU’s decision to take more time on the project should be a good thing. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock was such a successful portrayal of the character in Daredevil’s eponymous Netflix series that Disney has opted to officially incorporate the character into the MCU, with Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin both making cameo appearances in recent projects like Hawkeye, She-Hulk, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. But it seems that fans will have to wait a little longer for Daredevil to get his own time in the spotlight.
Confirming a rumor that had long been circulated, Marvel released a schedule update seemingly confirming the delay of Daredevil: Born Again, the series nowhere to be seen in Marvel’s slate for Disney+ in 2024. This would mean that the series is likely kicked further down the road to 2025, much to the dismay of eager fans hoping to see the triumphant return of Matt Murdock to Hell’s Kitchen in the MCU. However, the delay should ultimately be a good thing for the finished product for a multitude of reasons, putting the quality of the final product over meeting an arbitrary deadline.
7Marvel Can Scrap What Wasn’t Working In Daredevil: Born Again
Reports Indicated There Wasn’t Enough Daredevil In The Series
In the midst of behind the scenes drama at Marvel, news that Disney is completely scrapping and re-writing the story of Daredevil: Born Again might seem alarming. But scant details concerning the direction original writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord wanted to go in seem to already be justifying the choice, with series’ page in the US Copyright Office describing a series in which Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk attempt to leave their alter egos behind. Considering Matt Murdock already spent almost an entire season of the original series wearing black pajamas rather than his trademark suit, ensuring Daredevil is actually present is a good sign.
6Daredevil: Born Again Will Avoid The Pitfalls Of MCU Phase 4 & 5 Shows
Marvel Is Taking A More Standard TV Approach
One common criticism of previous Marvel Disney+ shows was the over-reliance on a greater connection to the MCU. It’s fine and good for Marvel’s properties to retain their trademark interconnectedness, but many of the MCU’s TV efforts have been less than impressive as standalone series, feeling more like homework for Marvel fans to sift through before the next major movie release. Luckily, reports have suggested that Marvel is aware of and taking action to rectify this problem, taking the opportunity of the delay to reformat Daredevil: Born Again as a more traditional, serialized T.V. show.
5Marvel Has The Opportunity To Bring Back Fan-Favorite Daredevil Characters
Foggy Nelson & Karen Page Are Currently Missing From Born Again
While Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk were both already long-confirmed for the show, each character already showing up in previous Marvel projects, there were some notable absences from Daredevil: Born Again‘s starting roster. Earlier news on the series before the overhaul confirmed that neither Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page nor Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson would return, much to the disappointment of fans from the Netflix show. With the delay, Disney has the chance to reincorporate these two fan-favorites into the series, crucial in grounding Daredevil with a more human element.
4Daredevil: Born Again Will Have A Traditional Showrunner
The series won’t be held by back the lack of a unified vision
Most television series live and die by the strength of their showrunner, a creator that acts as a producer overseeing the entire series much in the way one produces a feature film. In the past, Marvel has opted to omit the use of such driving lead creatives from their shows, which many have postulated to be why they’ve struggled in the TV landscape. Luckily, Disney has begun to recognize the value a singular vision can bring, with The Punisher producer and writer Dario Scardapane stepping up to fill the role in Daredevil: Born Again. Considering Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle has been confirmed to return, this choice is a no-brainer that’s sure to pay off.
3Daredevil Can Re-Launch In The MCU Alongside More Movies
Kicking the release back to 2025 helps to align Daredevil with more releases
Daredevil: Born Again is far from the only Marvel project to have been delayed as of late. Much of the MCU’s Phase 5 has been delayed to 2025, meaning that only a single Marvel movie, Deadpool 3, will release in 2024. This is actually a very good thing for Daredevil: Born Again, as it means more chances for the protector of Hell’s Kitchen to cross over with other new Marvel entries and an increased relevance in the entire franchise, Matt Murdock making his grand re-entrance alongside more significant projects.
2Daredevil: Born Again Will Feature Directors From Marvel’s Best Shows
Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson have proven success on Disney+
With nine Disney+ series now under Marvel Studios’ belt, the franchise has a better idea which MCU shows worked and which didn’t, meaning Daredevil: Born Again can take full advantage hindsight. Part of the series’ delay includes the incorporation of new directors, namely Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. Moorhead and Benson recently proved themselves on the sets of Moon Knight and season 2 of Loki, both widely considered to be the MCU’s Disney+ offerings at their best. Because of the delay, the new directors should have time to craft episodes just as engaging as their previous work.
1Daredevil: Born Again Will Be Closer In Tone To The Netflix Show
Disney recognizes why the original series was so successful
Marvel Studios may be eager to build a new Daredevil series for their own, but there’s no denying that the Netflix series laid the groundwork for them to be able to do so. Beyond simply re-casting Charlie Cox, Disney seems to be recognizing the accomplishments of the original Daredevil by retooling the new show to be closer in tone to the Netflix original. Disney doesn’t always go for darker themes, but it seems they’re willing to make an exception for Daredevil: Born Again, taking advantage of the delays to forge an analogous tone that fans of the Netflix show can be excited about.
