At Memorial, Victoria asks a doctor about Claire and explains, “I’m her mother.” She worries that Claire is shutting down and shutting people out — it scares her. The doctor tells Victoria it’s not unusual for people who have been through trauma to sleep a lot. Victoria asks if it’s alright for her to just sit by Claire. The doctor says she can and will come back to check on them both later.

In his apartment, Daniel is tidying up when Lucy comes out and groans, “Good morning.” Daniel teases his daughter, who asks, “Where’s Mom?” Daniel says she left after midnight. Lucy frowns. She assumed she’d sleep over. Daniel flashes to the kiss with Heather and asks, “Why would you say that?” Lucy shrugs. It was late — she thought they were both down for the night when they passed out on the couch. Lucy gushes about how cute they were and shows him the photo of them that she took. She makes a face and Daniel asks her what’s wrong. Lucy was hoping for them all to have breakfast together… like old times. She gets up and walks to her room. Daniel flashes to kissing Heather and to her saying, “You felt it too, didn’t you?” Daniel recalls saying they should talk about it, particularly since he’s with Lily now. He’s glad they were able to get past him turning toxic, it’s more than he deserves. Heather thinks he’s his old self. Daniel says he’s not. There’s no going back for him. He’s not that person anymore. “We never got a chance at that happily ever after,” they reflect. Heather says she got tangled in old memories — they shared a lot. Daniel reiterates that he’s with Lily now. Heather hopes she never hears about their kiss. Back in the present, Lucy asks Daniel if he’s OK.

Daniel lies that he was thinking about a new project. He notices she’s eating a breakfast bar and declares he’s making pancakes with bananas. Danny walks in and Daniel announces brunch at the table, Romalotti-style. They tell him to make tons. As Danny pulls out his tablet, Lucy gets to thinking and texts Heather to join them for pancakes. Heather replies to ask if Daniel knows she’s inviting her. Lucy responds that it was his idea.

In Crimson Lights, Phyllis cheerfully greets a sour-looking Christine and tells her it was fun running into her last night. Christine remarks on her date with the unsavory Tucker McCall. She informs Phyllis that she and Danny had a spectacular night, “One that even you couldn’t ruin no matter how hard you tried.” Phyllis insists ruining her evening wasn’t on her agenda. Christine makes digs about her spending time with Tucker. Phyllis says he knows how to have a good time. Christine reveals that she knows she made a move on Danny and accuses her of holding onto their rivalry, needling about her inability to move on. Instead of enjoying her freedom, she’s humiliating herself by going after a guy who doesn’t want her. “Stop inserting yourself where you’re not wanted.” Summer walks in as Christine tell her mother to leave her and Danny alone. Phyllis thinks it sounds like she’s afraid. Christine snaps that the redhead is delusional. Summer asks, “Seriously?! Is this how you two want to start the new year?”

Phyllis scoffs that she’s sorry Christine is afraid of a little friendly rivalry. Christine gawps, “Over a human being? Danny is a person.” She says she’s done here, hugs Summer, and wishes her luck. Once Chris is gone, Summer asks if Phyllis is chasing after Danny. Phyllis wonders if it’s illegal to reconnect with a friend. Summer learns Phyllis kissed him on New Year’s Eve. Phyllis protests that he and Chris aren’t in a committed relationship. She’s the better option, so he should go for it. Summer asks, “It doesn’t bother you to act like this?” Phyllis thinks Christine should be embarrassed. Until Danny tells her he’s 100% not interested, she’s keeping her options open. She’s working for what she wants and feels good around Danny, “Let’s let him decide who he wants.” She’s sure he’ll choose the woman who makes him laugh and brings joy to his life. Summer asks what happens when she does something that Danny finds unethical. Phyllis insists he’s a good influence in her life, so it won’t happen. Summer scoffs at the idea that Danny is a magic bullet that will turn her mother’s life around. She hasn’t even thought about him the whole time Summer has been alive… something happened to make her want him now. “You’re dragging Danny into your drama, just to get to Christine.”

Phyllis tells Summer she wants to be in love. It’s a normal human impulse. She gets choked up talking about putting up walls until one person gets by. You look in the mirror and like what you see. You’re laughing out loud again and his stories are the most fascinating thing in the world. Summer asks if that’s really the way she feels about Danny… Phyllis says, “Maybe I was talking about you and Chance.” Summer argues this isn’t about her. This is about her and lines she’s crossing. This is messed up! Phyllis is just saying that when you have a real connection with someone, you can’t deny it. Life is so short. You don’t get brownie points for not going after the thing you wanted. “What’s happened to you? You used to be so brave.” Summer says she’s grown up. Phyllis argues t hat she’s scared. The old Summer never would have let Chance walk away without telling him how she really feels, “Ever. Happy New Year.” She kisses her head. “I really, really hope it’s a good one for you.” On the patio, Sharon has been listening and rolls her eyes and shakes her head.

Christine arrives at Daniel’s place and Danny enthuses that Daniel is making pancakes. He was just about to invite her. Christine says it sounds and smells tempting. “I do want to spend more time with you. I just… I have an errand to run.” They enthuse about their amazing night. Christine asks, “Do you still like adventure?” He lives for it. Christine asks if he’s free this weekend. He is. Chris says, “Let’s run away together.” She wants to go to the lake for some quiet time with no interruptions or distractions. Then they can figure out what happens next. Danny asks, “Are you asking me out on a date?” Christine is rusty at this. Danny is glad it’s him and tells her yes. Christine declares she will plan everything, and it will be incredible. They kiss as she heads out, saying she’ll call him later.

As Christine leaves, Heathre arrives. Lucy tells her mom she really should have stayed over. Talk turns to college and boys. Daniel appears asking, “Who’s talking about boys?” He stops short when he sees Heather, who asks if it’s alright for her to be there. Lucy says, “Of course! We can’t have banana pancakes without you.” Heather shoots a knowing look.

In Claire’s room, appears to sleep as Victoria talks. Victoria knows she’s probably scared and confused and doesn’t know who to believe after everything her Aunt Jordan did to you, “And my mother, who’s your grandmother.” She wants Claire to know she’s not alone. There are so many people who want to fold her into their lives when she’s ready. There’s no rush. She knows this is new and there’s a lot of work to do, but she’s ready. So is her father, Cole. They want her to know the truth about who they are, “We’re family.” She’s strong. It’s in her DNA. “We’re here for you. I promise you that. You’re safe here with us. You have my word.”

At Daniel’s place, Danny tells his son his pancakes “rock on”. Lucy and Heather listen as they spar over the recipes for the pancakes and Danny’s sauce. Heather colorfully describes how wonderful Daniel’s pancakes were. They taste like home. “They were that good, guys.” Danny frowns as he watches Lucy.

When Lucy and Heather go to the kitchen to clean up. Danny warns his son that his daughter is playing matchmaker. He also notes the way that he and Heather are looking at each other. “Whatever is happening here, Daniel. You’ve got to straighten it out and fast. You have to let people know where they stand, so there’s no miscommunication.” Daniel muses, “You’ve got this all figured out, don’t you?” Danny says he’s been around the block. Daniel asks how his night was with Chris. Danny says it was so good that even Phyllis couldn’t derail it. Daniel asks what his mother did. Danny says that story will have to wait. He wants to know what’s going on with him and Heather. Daniel insists it was just breakfast. Danny knows his son is a romantic. When he feels love it’s hard to let it go. Daniel feels he’s been clear to Heather that he’s not giving it another shot. Danny isn’t sure she knows that. Heather and Lucy reappear. Heather has to go to work and Lucy tries to get her to stay. When Heather declines, Lucy decides to get a ride with her. When Lucy’s in her room getting her things, Heather thanks Daniel for making a spot for him at his table. He says there will always be a place for her there. Heather tells her that being with all of them was a great way to start the year. Daniel agrees. They hug. She leaves and Danny ask his son what the hell he’s getting himself into.

At Crimson Lights, Sharon approaches Summer and tells her she could pretend she didn’t overhear her and her mother talking just now. Summer gawps, “About Chance. Oh my God.” Sharon says even if she hadn’t overheard, it’s very obvious she enjoys being around him. Summer says he’s a nice guy but she’d never do anything to compromise their relationship. Sharon says that’s very mature of her. Summer’s trying. She tell Sharon that she doesn’t have to answer this if she doesn’t want to, but she’s wondering, “Are you in love with Chance?”

At Memorial, Victoria tells Claire she brought her a book but doesn’t know what she likes. She can’t wait to find out. She’s sure Claire is scared. She doesn’t know what comes next for them but she’s so grateful she’s in her life. Victoria says she’ll leave the books and places them on the bed. Claire awakens and sits up to look at her. Victoria tearfully says, “There she is. Happy New Year, Claire.”

At Crimson Lights,Sharon informs Summer that asking if she loves Chance is a very personal question. Summer’s asking her woman to woman where things stand between them. Sharon can’t speak for Chance, but they enjoy spending time together… talking. “We don’t have any expectations, labels, or pressure.” Summer thinks this sounds casual. It’s all Sharon can handle right now. She needs to find out who she is again. “My life is starting over for me again.” Her future is wide open and that’s all she wants right now. Chance walks in and says, “Good morning, ladies!” Sharon walks behind the counter. Chance, confused, looks at each of them and asks, “Is everything alright?”
