Salma Hayek was nervous to film some scenes from the upcoming series of Black Mirror, with the star claiming the script is full of shocking moments.

The actress, 56, is leading an all star cast of the hugely popular anthology series, devised by Charlie Brooker, with Michael Cera, Rory Culkin and Aaron Paul, with the new season set to air on streaming platform Netflix from June 15.

In the series Salma plays an average, non celebrity, version of herself who is stunned to discover the global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life.

While Salma joined Black Mirror for the sixth series, the dystopian show has captured the world’s attention for more than a decade now, with its twisted take on the future of technology.

Salma told the Radio Times: ‘There are so many moments that shocked me in the script. There is one huge one that I had to come to terms with, and made me ask myself, “Do I really want to do this? Am I going to get in trouble?”‘

However, the screen star faced her fears and admitted she had a blast working on the project.

‘It’s been absurd and a lot of fun,’ she said of the experience. ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play an interpretation of myself.

‘I got to explore the concepts and clichés people have about me and be self-deprecating.

‘It’s as if I created an alter ego where I could do the most disgusting, grotesque things that you would never do in real life… and have permission to do that.

‘It’s been surreal, and I think only a mind like Charlie Brooker’s could have come up with such a concept.’

It comes after Charlie said he tried using AI tool ChatGPT to generate a new episode of Black Mirror, but that the result was ‘s**t’.

The British writer and creator of the dystopian anthology programme said using the tool had produced something that read plausibly ‘at first glance’ but did not contain ‘any real original thought’..

Charlie told Empire Magazine: ‘I’ve toyed around with ChatGPT a bit.

Speaking out: Salma spoke to the current issue of the Radio Times

‘The first thing I did was type “generate Black Mirror episode” and it comes up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is s**t.

‘Because all it’s done is look up all the synopses of Black Mirror episodes, and sort of mush them together.

‘Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, “Oh, there’s not actually any real original thought here”.’

Charlie is executive producer of Black Mirror alongside Jessica Rhoades, Annabel Jones and Bisha K Ali.

In a previous interview with Netflix’s Tudum platform, he said: ‘I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people – and myself – or else what’s the point?

‘It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.’

The dystopian yet often darkly comic series, which takes a scathing look at modern society and alternative realities often relating to the overuse of technology, debuted in 2011 on Channel 4.

The programme moved to streaming giant Netflix in 2016.
