Loki Season 2 Set Up Avengers 5’s Most Likely Thor & Loki Reunion – But Not How You Think

The ending of Loki season 2 sets up a likely Thor and Loki reunion for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but not in the way many would think.

Loki season 2’s ending has set up a likely way for Thor and Loki to reunite, only in an entirely different way than many may think. More so than anything else since Avengers: Endgame, Loki can be argued to have captured the hearts of viewers in a way the MCU’s Phases 4 and 5 projects have failed to. This was solidified by Loki season 2’s ending, which capped off the titular characters’ second MCU redemption arc in an unbelievably satisfying fashion.

Through Loki creating a multiversal Yggdrasil tree and committing himself to sitting endlessly at the End of Time as the guardian of the multiverse, Loki season 2 began planting seeds for upcoming Marvel movies. One of these movies is the highly-anticipated Phase 6 movie, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with Loki establishing the TVA as a peacekeeping force dedicated to keeping tabs on variants of the former’s titular Conqueror. Aside from this, Loki season 2’s ending also set up a meeting between Loki and Thor in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty only in possibly the most unexpected way.

Loki Season 2 Made Sylvie’s Story Less Important Than Season 1

Sylvie had much less agency in Loki season 2 than in the show’s first outing.

The Loki in question that could reunite with Thor is actually Sylvie, Loki’s female variant from the Disney+ show. Before exploring how Loki season 2 set up Sylvie’s meeting with Thor, it is worth delving into why this would be a good move for her character. The main reason is that Sylvie was somewhat shortchanged in Loki season 2. While the character had some good moments and Sophia Di Martino was expectedly excellent in the role, Sylvie’s character was made significantly less integral to the story of Loki season 2 than she was for season 1.

For the most part in Loki season 2, Sylvie’s character was simply present rather than taking an active role in the story. In season 1, Sylvie was quite literally the driving character of the series with her actions against the TVA, the Sacred Timeline, and He Who Remains being ever-present across all six episodes of Loki season 1. In Loki season 2, however, Sylvie had no real agency in any installment after episodes 2 and 3.

Loki Season 2’s Ending Makes Loki An Unlikely Avenger Against Kang

Loki’s post at the End of Time makes him an unlikely combatant against the Conqueror.

Concerning why Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is likely to be replaced by Sylvie as the Loki variant who reunites with Thor, Loki season 2’s ending also made this clear. As of the end of Loki, the titular Asgardian god is stranded at the End of Time, holding together the branches of the multiverse. The events of Lokled audiences to believe that, should Loki abandon his post, the multiverse would collapse and the branches would begin to die.

As such, Loki is unlikely to take an active role in the fight against Kang for Avengers 5. Loki’s role as the person responsible for keeping the multiverse intact means that he is now trusting the task of dealing with Kang’s variants and the Multiversal War to the TVA agents like Mobius, B-15, Casey, and Ouroboros. However, perhaps even more interestingly, Loki could be leaving the fight against Kang up to someone who knows of his threat above everyone else: Sylvie.

Sylvie Could Take Loki’s Theorized Place In The Avengers

Sylvie’s Loki season 2 could be rectified going into Phase 6’s culmination.

Right up until the end of Loki season 2, it was theorized by many that Loki would end the season in charge of the TVA. In doing so, many assumed the titular god would act as a multiversal Nick Fury, using the TVA as a means to build a team strong enough to protect the multiverse from He Who Remains’ variants. That said, the ending of Loki season 2 proves that this will likely not be the case if Loki cannot leave the Citadel at the End of Time.

This could all open the door for Sylvie to take Loki’s originally theorized place as an Avenger set on battling Kang. More so than anyone else besides Ant-Man in the MCU, Sylvie is aware of Kang’s danger. She hated He Who Remains, meaning it stands to reason she would likely hate his more malevolent variants hellbent on conquering her timeline. As such, Sylvie’s motivation for joining forces with the Avengers to defeat Kang would make sense.

Finally, this would allow a version of Loki to reunite with Thor in the form of Sylvie. Across Loki‘s two seasons, little to nothing was revealed about Sylvie’s home before it was destroyed including her relationship with her own Thor, Frigga, Odin, and other Asgardians. Through meeting a version of Thor, this history could be provided while allowing a reunion of sorts between Loki and Thor. While a meeting between the God of Thunder and Loki at the End of Time is possible, Loki season 2’s ending makes it much more likely for this reunion to happen in a completely different, potentially more interesting, way.
