Pundit Ally McCoist was left stunned at what he saw from Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the first half of tonight’s defeat to Manchester United.
He claimed during his coverage for Amazon Prime that the Argentine giving away a penalty was an extremely avoidable situation early in the first half.
The Blues were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford, and were way off their best tonight which will no doubt have infuriated Mauricio Pochettino.
Cole Palmer’s goal in stoppage time of the first half was not enough, as the Blues fell back to old habits in big games.
The manager saw a spirited and gritted display with 10 men last weekend against Brighton, however any of that fight was nowhere to be seen tonight.
One player who was way off his best was Fernandez, who really struggled in the middle of the park.
McCoist on Fernandez
While Robert Sanchez made the save, it did not take long before the Blues were behind.
McCoist was baffled at Fernandez’s decision to make the challenge, especially seeing as the danger looked as if it had fizzled out.
He said: “I tell you what, it’s a stupid challenge from Fernandez. What a silly challenge. Stupid challenge.”
After his two goal performance against Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, it is fair to say that an off day is more of a rarity for the 23-year-old.
He will be hoping to be back to his best when the Blues return to action at the weekend against Everton.
