With the release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” this week, Warner Bros. long, disappointing year of superhero films comes to a merciful end.

No matter how well ‘Lost Kingdom’ does at the box office, the film marks the last of the pre-James Gunn/Peter Safran regime, and thus, closes the book on the DCEU. And with all of this being very public knowledge, ‘Aquaman’ star Jason Momoa has a really strange interview cycle to take part in. It’s not so much that he’s promoting ‘Lost Kingdom,’ but instead mourning the death of a franchise and his possible superhero future. All that to say, the actor is being very open and honest about the uncertainty of what lies ahead.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Jason Momoa talked about his potential future as Aquaman and what he might be doing as part of Gunn and Safran’s new DCU. Long story short, he doesn’t have any idea what the future holds, but it definitely doesn’t seem like his version of Aquaman is sticking around.

“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice,” Momoa explained. “The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility. But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.’”

Momoa isn’t breaking new ground with these comments. While WB has been cagey about what the future holds for the previous actors in their iconic roles (probably as to not completely crater the box office chances of these lame duck films), there have been plenty of reports (and comments from DC Studios co-CEO Gunn) that paint a clearer picture. Momoa’s Aquaman is likely joining the ranks of Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman, and Ezra Miller’s Flash as relics of a bygone era, paving the way for a new vision/reboot of the continuity.

That said, there have been reports that Momoa has been in talks to play Lobo, a very unique character (to say the least), in the world of DC comics. But when asked about that, the actor plays coy.

“If there’s a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it,” Momoa said. “This is my home. Warner and DC is definitely my home. So, that’s all I’ll say.”

He added, “I was a big Lobo fan growing up, I read every comic. So that would be really cool.”

For those unaware, Lobo was created as a satire of the grim, gritty characters that were being used in comics at the time, decades ago. He was actually never supposed to be popular. However, the cigar smoking, chain wielding biker alien badass become a fan-favorite, and in turn, turned from satire to the object he was created to mock. All that to say, he’s a character born to be somewhat cringey if taken too seriously, so it would be interesting to see how that character translates to the DCU.

Of course, Momoa surely fits the bill of someone who could play Lobo, so who knows? One thing is for sure, his days as Aquaman are coming to an end. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” arrives in theaters on December 22.
