Selena Gomez has attracted attention over her reaction to Chris Brown being mentioned at the VMAs last night and now a body language expert has exclusively analysed her movements for The Mirror
Selena Gomez ‘s reaction to Chris Brown being mentioned at the MTV Video Music Awards looked like “a gesture of disgust,” a body language expert has revealed.
The singer, 31, was among the celebrities in attendance at the annual awards show – known as the VMAs – on Tuesday evening. She was seen in the audience at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, during the MTV ceremony.

Footage showed her in the crowd as the nominees for Best R&B were being read out and it’s gone viral on social media over Selena’s reaction when the collaboration How Does it Feel between Chris and singer Chlöe was listed.

Selena didn’t look impressed as the pair’s collaboration was mentioned among the nominees, prior to SZA’s Shirt being announced as the winner. Her facial expression seemed particularly negative after Chris had been referenced.
The Mirror has since spoken to body language expert Judi James about the footage, which has attracted attention on social media this week. Judi told us: “Selena’s change of body language mood music is extreme and instant here.
“One second she’s smiling sweetly with her head cocked to listen politely and her hands held up ready in a clapping position and the next the whole look has crumbled to be replaced with what looks extremely and eerily similar to a gesture of disgust.”
Judi continued: “Those clapping hands drop down, as do her eyes as she looks down in a cut-off gesture. Her mouth movement is speedy but powerful. The corners of her mouth pull down while the upper lip lifts and even ripples.
“It looks like the kind of rejection gesture a child learns to reject food it dislikes and as adults we use it to signal at anything we really don’t approve of or like.
“Selena doesn’t make a whole performance of this expression, there’s no head-shaking or eye-rolling to the camera but caught in a still shot it’s understandable why it’s been claimed she was letting her feelings known, either deliberately or subconsciously.”

Judi concluded by noting that Selena’s facial expression subsequently changed, adding: “The way she quickly returns the sweet social smile afterwards shows the total contrast in mood here.”
Selena – who won Best Afrobeats for her collaboration Calm Down with Rema – previously described herself as a “huge fan” of rapper Chris, according to Capital FM. She told the radio network back in 2015: “I am such a huge fan of his.”
At the time, the singer suggested she had talked about music with Chris. Selena added: “So, not to say there isn’t opportunity for [a collaboration], but honestly I love his music, I think he’s so incredible and I’m a big fan of hip hop.”
Some fans appreciated her apparent reaction at the VMAs to Chris – who’s faced legal trouble over the years, including having admitted to physically assaulting Rihanna in 2009. He doesn’t appear to have been at the VMAs this year.
