Gen V executive producers Eric Kripke and Michele Fazekas address the major virus reveal from the latest episode of The Boys spinoff.

The latest episode of the college-set spinoff dropped a major bombshell, revealing that the dean of Godolkin University is creating a contagious virus that could kill Supes. Speaking with EW, Kripke and Fazekas addressed their decision to introduce such a game-changing storyline on Gen V. “I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that, by the end of season 1 of Gen V, there’s a handoff to season 4 of The Boys” Kripke said. “When they were breaking the virus storyline, they just had to be in regular communication with me in my room to understand, “Is that a thing out in the world that’ll be helpful to us or is it going to f— us?”

Despite the virus reveal’s potential implications to The Boys universe going forward, Fazekas assured fans that the said storyline won’t “get too complicated.” She added, “You should be able to watch Gen V and not watch The Boys. You can watch The Boys and not watch Gen V. But [the shows] talking to each other and being consistent is always important.”

Before Dean Shetty’s personal plan was revealed in Episode 6 of Gen V, it was confirmed that Vought International had other plans in mind for the virus that Doctor Cardosa was tasked to create. In Episode 5 titled “Welcome to the Monster Club,” Cardosa revealed that the virus was originally meant to control superheroes, which would make Vought invincible even to the likes of Homelander and Soldier Boy, whose abilities and impulsiveness make them unmanageable for the company. It remains unclear why Dean Shetty wants to kill Supes with the virus, but the remaining two episodes of Gen V are expected to reveal her true intentions.

Gen V Scores Early Season 2 Renewal

Last Oct. 19, Amazon Studios officially announced the early Season 2 renewal of Gen V, after the coming-of-age superhero spinoff earned an overwhelmingly positive response from both critics and viewers. “Gen V is Prime Video’s most acquisitive new Original series of 2023, and we’re excited that our incredible cast and crew are going to continue telling brave and bold stories from Gen V to our customers,” Amazon executive Vernon Sanders said in a statement praising showrunners Fazekas and Tara Butters, along with executive producers Kripke, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for their work.

Prior to the renewal, Fazekas and Kripke previously shared that they have already started writing for Gen V Season 2, following the end of the Writers Guild of America’s 148-day-long strike. The series is being led by Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li, Chance Perdomo as Andre Anderson, Asa Germann as Sam Riordan, and Patrick Schwarzenegger as Luke Riordan/ Golden Boy. It takes place at the premier superhero college Godolkin University, wherein lies one of Vought’s darkest secrets involving Supe experimentation.
