Zach Wilson’s uncertain future in the New York Jets has been the hot talking point all through the off-season. With the prime quarterback, Aaron Rogers, set to return after recovery from his previous season’s injury, the Jets might be in search of a new backup QB, with Zach Wilson failing to cement his position in the previous season.

But here comes the issue of money! Wilson was the highest-paid backup quarterback in the 2023 season, with a total guaranteed salary of $35.15 million. If the Jets choose to trade Wilson, they can save about $5.5 million for the next season, but the new replacement options are not going to be cheap!

Will the funds allow the Jets to release Wilson?

It’s highly likely that the New York Jets will choose to enter the 2024 season with a new backup quarterback for Aaron Rogers. When their QB is set to make a comeback from his Achilles injury, the Jets do not want to repeat the mistakes of their previous season. Rogers only played one series before his injury, and Wilson had to be the starting QB. Unfortunately, Wilson couldn’t support the team’s offense, and the Jets ended with a disappointing 7-10.

Now comes the real question: the logistics of replacing Wilson. If the Jets decide to simply release the QB, they’ll have to bear the hit of his guaranteed pay for the year and will have a $20.8 million dead cap hit. Considering these figures, a trade would be a better option for New York. With a cap hit of $11.5 million and $5.7 million dead money, the team can still save up something for more picks to upgrade their team.

There’s also the option of the NFL Draft. The Jets have five total picks and the 10th overall pick. Investing in a backup quarterback doesn’t seem like a favorable choice, given the pick order. This leaves us with the trade option. With some enticing offers on the table, who will the Jets go for in the 2024 season?Who will replace Zach Wilson?

With several quarterback trade rumors on the round, options are a plenty for the Jets. They could go for a veteran QB like Jacoby Brissett or a more affordable option in the form of rookie Sam Howell. Another name who might be a good fit in the New York roster is Ryan Tanehill. The Titan’s experienced starter is the go to option for the team if they want a reliable support for Rogers. Tanehill comes with an impressive record of 81-70. According to Pro Football Focus, his contract will be worth $11.5 million for the next season, which can be an attractive option.

If the Jets want to further save up, Washington Commanders’ Sam Howell is a good way to go. With 3946 yards, 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 2023, the QB shows potential for the coming season. Under a rookie contract with a pay of $1 million per season, Howell will not pose a significant dent on New York’s cap space.
