SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
Netflix’s Triple Frontier has a very conclusive ending but still leaves the door open for another adventure with the remaining crew, leaving audiences wondering: will there be a Triple Frontier 2? Premiering in 2019, the film follows a group of friends who put their skills as mercenaries to the test for one last mission which pits them against a powerful South American drug lord. Noted for its star-studded cast, Triple Frontier had all the makings of a bona fide action epic and upped Netflix’s prestige as a source of new films.
The massive feature was met with decent reviews from critics, many of whom applauded the stellar cast for helping to elevate familiar action movie tropes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Though the ending of Triple Frontier could be read as a conclusive finale, the opportunity for a sequel is never really off the table when it comes to popular action cinema. Even so, little has been made about Triple Frontier 2 in the years since the first film’s premiere.
Triple Frontier 2 Latest News
After years of silence regarding a potential sequel, the latest news sees Triple Frontier 2 get a major update that might suggest the movie is on the way. Charlie Hunnam starred in the first film as William “Ironhead” Miller, and the Sons of Anarchy star is intricately involved with Triple Frontier 2. Hunnam said “[It is in its] absolute infancy. Nothing guaranteed, but I just set up recently as the main producer on a potential sequel to Triple Frontier at Netflix.”
Though this doesn’t confirm a sequel is on the way, it does bode well for the project’s future. With Hunnam as a producer, he will likely return to the cast as well, which will offer some continuity. Perhaps the most difficult barrier for Triple Frontier 2 is reuniting the cast members, and Hunnam’s involvement does make that task a little bit easier.
Triple Frontier 2 Is Not Confirmed
While Charlie Hunnam’s announcement is exciting, Netflix hasn’t officially green-lit Triple Frontier 2, and any plans are still in their infancy. However, Hunnam’s willingness to speak about the movie is a good sign and could suggest that the actor/producer has confidence in Triple Frontier 2 eventually becoming a reality.
Triple Frontier 2 Cast
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the cast of Triple Frontier 2 is likely to include Charlie Hunnam, since he has recently revealed himself to be a producer on the fledgling project. This means Hunnam’s William “Ironhead” Miller will be back in action, and he could be joined by his remaining co-stars from the first movie. Since Ben Affleck’s “Redfly” met his end in Triple Frontier, the Oscar-winner probably won’t be back for the sequel. Instead, Triple Frontier 2 could recruit another big name to fill Affleck’s spot.
With that in mind, the cast of Triple Frontier 2 could include:
Actor
Triple Frontier Role
Oscar Isaac
Santiago “Pope” Garcia
Charlie Hunnam
William “Ironhead” Miller
Garrett Hedlund
Benjamin “Benny” Miller
Pedro Pascal
Francisco “Catfish” Morales
Adria Arjona
Yovanna
Triple Frontier 2 Story
For Triple Frontier 2 to work, a plot would need to be devised that was even bigger than the first. Since the initial mission was something of a last hurrah for the gang, it would probably take something pretty massive to get them to come out of retirement again, especially in the wake of the death of “Redfly”. However, the mission would likely be a heist, and would probably include a large sum of cash that needed to be secured for some noble purpose. Only time will tell, but Triple Frontier 2 has the opportunity to up the ante.
