Selena Gomez is refuting rumors that her new song “Single Soon” is about her relationship with ex-lover The Weeknd.
The last time Selena Gomez released a solo music work was in 2020. After that, she was busy with other projects, such as the cooking show Selena + Chef, the long-running detective series Only Murders in the Building, and own cosmetic brand. It seemed like Selena Gomez had abandoned the music industry, but she suddenly announced her return with a single titled “Single Soon”, released on August 25.
Shortly after the song’s release, rumors surfaced that the song was actually about The Weeknd, whom she dated and even briefly moved in with, during a nine-month relationship on 2017. The song also comes just months after DailyMail exclusively reported that Selena Gomez thought The Weeknd’s show The Idol was “creepy” because main character Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) had so many similarities to her own real-life journey.
Faced with rumors about the meaning of her new song, Selena Gomez commented on an Instagram post from the website Hollywood Life, revealing that it’s not true.
In 2017, the “Same Old Love” singer had a deep love affair with singer The Weeknd. The couple traveled to Italy in January and made it public on Instagram at the end of the month. In May, Selena and the Canadian star attended the Met Gala red carpet together, sharing a passionate kiss in front of the camera lens.
However, their love ended quietly in October of that year. Selena revealed she still maintains a good friendship with The Weeknd: “What I’m really proud of is having such a friendship with him. I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life. We’re married.” ended in a peaceful way and still cared for each other,” the female singer once confided in Billboard magazine.
