Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, opens up about a possible return in the Jon Snow (Kit Harington) sequel series.
Emilia Clarke opens up about whether she’d return to her role as Daenerys from Game of Thrones. Based on George R.R. Martins’s best-selling book series, A Song of Fire and Ice, Game of Thrones debuted on HBO in 2011. Created by David Benioff and D.B Weiss, the fantasy drama took the television world by storm and became one of HBO’s biggest hits. Starring Clarke as Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, and Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones featured some of television’s most graphic violence, complex character arcs, and intense battle sequences.
In 2019, HBO premiered the eighth and final season of the fantasy drama series. Game of Thrones season 8 quickly became the subject of controversy and backlash, with fans criticizing its clunky pacing, plot holes, and jarring character development. Game of Thrones‘ ending saw Jon kill Daenerys Targaryen after her rapid downfall, which led him back to the Night’s Watch. Since Game of Throne’s sign-off, various projects have come to light that will expand the epic franchise. These include House of the Dragon and a Jon Snow sequel series, which will see Harington reprise his role.
Now, Clarke opens up about a possible return as the Mother of Dragons. In an interview with BBC, Clarke reveals she has no plan of reprising her Game of Thrones role. Speaking on the Jon Snow sequel series, Clarke says, as far as she knows, the project is happening and that Harington formulated the idea for the show. Clarke went on to address the topic of reprising her role as Daenerys. When asked if she would ever consider appearing in the Game of Thrones spinoff, Clarke said, “No, I think I’m done.”
Of course, the news of the Game of Thrones spinoff series is still fresh for fans, and it may take a while before the creative forces behind the project start to flesh out the show for development. Game of Thrones‘ ending featured many surviving characters, including Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), Sansa Stark (Turner), Arya Stark (Williams), and Brienne (Gwendoline Christine), and left the door open for potential cameo appearances in Jon Snow’s series. For now, it appears Clarke has moved on from her Game of Thrones role, and the Daenerys actor is set to make her MCU debut in the upcoming Secret Invasion series.
Indeed, Game of Thrones propelled Clarke’s career to new heights, as well as the other cast members of the fantasy series. However, Game of Thrones was a reportedly traumatic, grueling, and intense show to film for its players. After eight seasons of portraying the Mother of Dragons, it makes sense that Clarke has opted to move on from Game of Thrones. Clarke seems supportive of Harington’s endeavor and the expansion of the Game of Thrones franchise. For now, Game of Thrones fans can look forward to hearing more developments on the upcoming spinoff series.
