Young African-American Lady wins $25,000 English scholarship, set to study in the UK for free

A young African-American lady named Kyana Washington has won an English scholarship worth 25,000 dollars to study at any university of her choice in the United Kingdom.

Kyana Washington, a Manvel native is an English major from Spelman College, Atlanta who was selected as the English in Action 2018-2019 Luard Morse Scholarship recipient.

The English in Action 2018-2019 Luard Morse Scholarship is a program of The English-Speaking Union. The Executive Director of the English-Speaking Union, Christopher Broadwell stated that Kyana will receive a scholarship worth 25,000 dollars.

The scholarship money will fund her for a semester of study at a university she chose in the United Kingdom during the 2018-2019 academic year. Kyana said she is glad to have received the scholarship as it gave her the opportunity to meet brilliant-minded people like herself.

”Being selected as a Luard Morse Scholarship finalist has been an amazing experience. I’ve enjoyed meeting inspiring students and alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country,” Kyana said in an interview.

“It was a pleasure to have been able to engage in a thought-provoking discussion about feminism, literature, and current events. My interview has inspired me to continue my intellectual exploration and to continue pursuing my goal of becoming an advocate for women in my study of both English and Philosophy,” she added.

Kyana said she is interested to study in either the University of Oxford, University College London, or Cambridge University. While in the United Kingdom, she will serve as an unofficial ambassador for the United States and, upon her return to Spellman College, for the United Kingdom.

While a student at Spelman College, she focused on applying feminist theory to both her English and philosophical studies. She said she was part of a community that encourages students to explore and to question.

She said during her time in the United Kingdom, she would study Victorian literature because she wanted to analyze the attitudes held toward women and the attitudes that women held during this period.

She added that she hoped to make discoveries about the ideologies that were present and how they contributed to the position that women held within this society.

”In my study of philosophy, I hope to focus on the ways Victorian philosophers viewed and depicted women. Using applications of feminist theory, my goal is to research how philosophy contributed to the oppression of women during this time,” she said.
